Dead of Night
FRIDAY NIGHT VHS HORROR / FILM / CULTURE

EVERY NEIGHBOR IS A SUSPECT

Small towns are supposed to be safe.

Everybody knows everybody.

The neighbors wave.

The streets are quiet.

And when something goes wrong, there's always somebody nearby willing to help.

But in Dead of Night, knowing your neighbors might be the most frightening thing of all.

Because somebody in Elmwood Heights is killing people.

And nobody knows who will be next.

THE FIRST BODY

It begins with the discovery of a teenage girl's mutilated body.

The violence is horrifying enough to send shock waves through the community.

This isn't an ordinary disappearance.

It isn't a tragic accident.

Someone has committed a brutal murder.

And the people of Elmwood Heights suddenly realize that the place they've always considered home may not be safe.

The town's newly elected mayor, played by Alex Camacho, moves quickly to calm the public.

His solution is a neighborhood watch.

Residents watching their streets.

Neighbors watching one another.

The community coming together to protect itself.

At least, that's the idea.

But the murders don't stop.

A TOWN UNDER SUSPICION

The problem with a neighborhood watch is that it depends on trust.

And trust is disappearing.

Every new murder makes the community more frightened.

Every unexplained movement becomes suspicious.

Every unfamiliar vehicle raises questions.

The residents want answers.

They want protection.

And increasingly, they want somebody to blame.

At the center of the investigation is Sheriff Weaver, played by Dermot Mulroney.

He's responsible for finding the killer before the town completely unravels.

But the violence is escalating.

And whatever pattern exists behind the murders isn't immediately clear.

The film's official synopsis describes a community descending into hysteria as the sheriff struggles to stop the killings.

It's a familiar horror setup.

But an effective one.

Because the danger isn't confined to the masked murderer.

Fear itself becomes a threat.

And a frightened town can become a dangerous place even before the killer strikes again.

THE SHERIFF'S DAUGHTER

Then there's Kelly Weaver.

Played by Kirrilee Berger, Kelly is the sheriff's daughter.

And she isn't content to wait for the adults to solve the mystery.

As the murders continue, Kelly becomes increasingly interested in the killer's motives.

Why these victims?

Why this town?

And what is the murderer actually trying to accomplish?

The official synopsis suggests that Kelly senses something darker behind the killings than simple violence.

That's where the film's mystery becomes particularly important.

A masked killer can be frightening because of what they do.

But a mystery becomes frightening because of what you don't know.

The audience knows somebody is responsible.

The characters know somebody is responsible.

But until the truth is revealed, everyone remains a possibility.

THE NIGHT STALKER INFLUENCE

One of the more interesting details surrounding Dead of Night is its reported inspiration.

According to the newly announced theatrical release coverage, director Derek Sulek drew in part from the fear that gripped Los Angeles during the era of the Night Stalker murders.

That doesn't make Dead of Night a biographical film about Richard Ramirez.

It isn't being marketed as a true-crime recreation.

Instead, the influence appears to be atmospheric.

The fear of an unpredictable killer.

The uncertainty about where violence might happen next.

The growing sense that ordinary precautions may not be enough.

And the psychological damage that fear can inflict on an entire community.

In Elmwood Heights, that atmosphere becomes the foundation for a fictional slasher mystery.

The residents are frightened.

The police are under pressure.

And every new death makes the town feel smaller.

THE FACES BEHIND THE FEAR

The film brings together a recognizable cast.

Dermot Mulroney plays Sheriff Weaver.

Horror audiences will recognize him from Scream VI, while his wider filmography includes thrillers, dramas, and comedies.

Scott Grimes also stars, alongside Jake Busey, whose genre credits include The Frighteners and Starship Troopers.

The ensemble includes Kirrilee Berger, Julianne Arrieta, Alex Camacho, Zach Justice, Miles Anderson, Raymond Cham, Sean Whalen, Ana Nicolle Chavez, and Sierra Nowak.

The film is directed by Derek Sulek, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Durham.

Production comes from Fade to Black Films and ZMA Films, with Oren Kamara, Derek Sulek, and Daniel Sheldoncredited as producers.

The film also has a notable name among its executive producers.

Chris Jericho, the professional wrestler and musician, is identified as an executive producer in the October theatrical acquisition coverage.

THE KILLER COULD BE ANYONE

What makes the premise interesting isn't simply that Elmwood Heights has a murderer.

It's that the town's response may make the situation worse.

The mayor wants a neighborhood watch.

The sheriff wants evidence.

Kelly wants to understand the killer's motives.

And the residents want to feel safe again.

Those goals aren't necessarily compatible.

A frightened community can become suspicious of the wrong people.

An investigation can become overwhelmed by pressure.

And a killer who understands the town's fear may be able to use it.

That's the central tension in Dead of Night.

A murderer is hiding somewhere.

But fear is spreading everywhere.

And the closer the community looks at itself, the less certain it becomes about who can be trusted.

NOVEMBER BRINGS THE DARKNESS

Dead of Night is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on November 13, 2026, through Level 33 Entertainment.

The release is classified as limited, meaning it won't necessarily be available at every theater.

There is one small complication.

Fandango currently lists November 11.

But the new distribution announcement, The Numbers, Rotten Tomatoes, and Atom Tickets identify November 13.

For Friday Night VHS, we're using November 13 until stronger distributor information says otherwise.

And we're not assigning an unverified runtime.

The movie deserves an accurate listing rather than a convenient guess.

LOCK YOUR DOORS

The most disturbing thing about a small-town killer isn't always the mask.

Sometimes it's the possibility that the person underneath it is familiar.

Someone you've passed on the sidewalk.

Someone you've spoken to at the grocery store.

Someone who knows your name.

Someone who lives a few houses away.

That's the fear at the center of Dead of Night.

A community believes it knows itself.

Then the murders begin.

And suddenly, every familiar face looks different.

As of October 14, Friday Night VHS marks Dead of Night:

COMING SOON.

The killer's identity remains a mystery.

The town is running out of patience.

And the sheriff is running out of time.

Lock the doors.

Close the curtains.

And don't assume the person next door is on your side.
