THE INFECTED ARE LEARNING

Ten years after Train to Busan, Yeon Sang-ho is back among the infected.

This time there is no train out.

There is only up.

In Colony, a mysterious outbreak erupts inside a skyscraper in Seoul. Kwon Se-jeong, a biotechnology scientist played by Gianna Jun, is inside attending a biotech conference when the situation collapses. Authorities seal the building, leaving everyone inside trapped with the infected. 

And these aren't static monsters.

They change.

KOFIC describes the infected evolving from crawling, animal-like figures into coordinated predators as Se-jeong and the remaining survivors attempt to reach the rooftop for rescue. 

That's the wrinkle that separates Colony from a simple return to familiar territory for the filmmaker who made Train to Busan.

The threat can adapt.

A survival strategy that works now might not work later.

And the building that initially looks like protection becomes the structure keeping everyone inside with it.

Yeon's ensemble is led by Gianna Jun, internationally also known as Jun Ji-hyun, as Kwon Se-jeong. She is joined by Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rock and Go Soo. 

Koo plays Seo Young-cheol, while Ji plays Choi Hyun-seok, Kim plays Choi Hyun-hee, Shin plays Gong Seol-hee, and Go Soo plays Han Gyu-seong. 

Yeon directed the film and co-wrote it with Choi Kyu-seok, continuing a creative partnership that extends across several of Yeon's projects. Cinematographer Byun Bong-sun shot the film, with Han Mee-yeon serving as editor. 

But the simplest way to understand Colony might be through its architecture.

Train to Busan moved horizontally.

Its survivors raced from carriage to carriage aboard a machine hurtling toward a destination.

Colony moves vertically.

The survivors climb.

Every floor theoretically brings them closer to the rooftop and rescue.

Every floor also gives an evolving outbreak more time to become something worse.

That makes progress itself dangerous.

The higher they climb, the more the situation changes beneath them.

And according to KOFIC's official synopsis, something else waits above: a truth that becomes more terrifying as the survivors approach it.

The film began its international life at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it made its world premiere as part of the festival's Midnight Screenings. It subsequently made its North American premiere as the opening-night presentation of the 2026 New York Asian Film Festival at Film at Lincoln Center. 

Before arriving in America, Colony had already become a major theatrical release at home.

It opened in South Korea on May 21, 2026. KOFIC's database records more than 5.84 million admissions and approximately $45.6 million in gross receipts in South Korea as of September 9. 

Well Go USA brought the film to U.S. theaters on August 28, 2026. 

It's an interesting return for Yeon.

A decade after sending terrified passengers racing through narrow train cars, he's constructed another outbreak around confinement.

Only the geometry has changed.

The doors are sealed.

The building rises above them.

The infected are changing.

And somewhere at the top is the possibility of escape.

The problem is that whatever is chasing them is getting better at the chase.
